Renovation of a historic 1860 home and the creation of a large extension in the same style
Generations of alterations and additions had compromised the design integrity of this historic 1860 home. The new owners, sensitive to the beauty and importance of the original structure, asked for it to be restored to its original state and for a new wing to be added that complemented the original. The addition harmonizes with the existing structure, yet remains discreetly secondary. Placed far back from the street, its rooflines manipulated to minimize massing, the addition subtly counterbalances the main structure. With help from the homeowners, DCA researched the history of the house and its original architect, Daniel Atwood, to ensure that decisions about materials, colors, and other details throughout the entire home were historically appropriate.
